GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM RIO DE JANEIRO - 2000-2002 (JEAN NOUVEL)

Developed at the request Municipality of Rio de Janeiro through its Mayor Cesar Maia, this project’s site was the 400 meter Pier Mauá on Guanabara Bay, and was intended to be the driving force for the rejuvenation of Rio’s Cais do Porto neighborhood.  Completely embracing the environment and ecology of the site and the city, much of Jean Nouvel’s bold design was underwater, and included artificial rainforests, gardens, and waterfalls for an exhibition program that emphasized new media, and a Brazilian and Latin American collection.
