FANG LIJUN: A CONCEPT OF HISTORY: THE ART OF FANG LIJUN

A fierce observer of contemporary culture and politics, Fang Lijun was a founding protagonist of what become known as the Cynical Realist movement in the late 1980s China, which is widely regarded as a major turning point for contemporary art in that country.  Entitled “A Concept of History: The Art of Fang Lijun,” this exhibition will be Fang’s first major solo exhibition in the United States-– featuring a vast suite of his work spanning nearly four decades-- ranging from his visually immersive, monumentally-scaled paintings, to his early rarely-exhibited ink and pencil sketches, to new works of sculptural porcelain, some of which will be produced and fired by museum visitors in a participatory kiln project set within the galleries.

The exhibition will occupy MASS MoCA’s signature, football-field sized Building 5 gallery, radically re-configured into nine separate galleries to best display the extraordinary aesthetic and technical range of his work.  The exhibition will include Fang’s work in multiple mediums: drawing, painting, monumental woodcuts, and a variety of sculptural and installation technologies.

方力钧：历史的观念：方力钧艺术展

作为当代文化和政治的激进观察者，方力钧是中国20世纪80年代末玩世现实主义运动的开创者之一，20世纪80年代末也被广泛认为是中国当代艺术的主要转折点。展览命名为“历史的观念：方力钧艺术展”，也表明这次展览将成为方力钧在美国的首次个展——展出他将近40年来的大量作品——从他视觉沉浸式的纪念油画到他早期鲜有展出的钢笔和铅笔素描，再到瓷器雕塑新作，有些瓷器作品将由参观游客在画廊内参与互动瓷器烧制活动烧制而成。

个展将署名麻省当代艺术博物馆，在足球场大小的5号楼画廊举行，楼内部已经布置成9个独立的画廊，以便更好地展示方力钧作品的非凡美学和工艺程度。个展囊括了方力钧各种形式的作品：素描、油画、纪念木版画以及一批雕塑和装置工艺。
